OFFICER STURGEON TO SPEAK ON METH LABS
Please join us this Sunday in giving a warm welcome to Officer Dean Sturgeon of the 4th Division, Louisville Metro Police Dept. Meth labs not only produce illegal drugs for street sale, but also bring in increased criminal activity to the neighborhood. Meth labs use hazardous chemicals that have caused severe explosions and property damage to dwellings and next-door neighbors. The 4th Division has been working hard to keep meth lab operators from establishing a foothold in Old Louisville. However, identifying and reporting suspected operations is the key to catching and closing down meth lab operations before they can become established and cause injury and possibly death. Officer Sturgeon will provide us with tips and information about what to look for. Many of these signs may not be obvious to the casual observer, but may be a clue that the police can use to check on suspected meth operations. We hope neighbors will take advantage of this opportunity to become more informed and pro-active in keeping our neighborhood safe.As an additional bonus, we are trying to arrange for one of the new 4th Division Police ATV units to be brought to our meeting for neighbors to get a first glimpse of - weather and availability permitting. The SSNA donated $1000 to the purchase of an ATV.
FIRST NEIGHBORHOOD JUNK PICKUP FOR 2009!
Old Louisville’s first quarterly junk pickup for the year is scheduled Monday-Friday, March 2-6. Junk should be placed at your regular collection point by Sunday night, March 1. The city will pick up: furniture, mattresses, appliances, tires, and other bulky items. Tree limbs must be less than four feet long and four inches in diameter and stacked separately. Any bagged items must weigh less than 60 pounds. The city will not pick up construction materials (gutters, dry wall, etc.), hazardous waste materials, or auto parts. Please ask your neighbors to comply with the laws concerning junk pickups and garbage collections. Residents should be aware that unacceptable items set out for junk pickup, or set out on the wrong dates, can result in fines of $100 to $1000 per day in addition to criminal prosecution. For more information on the junk pickup or to report illegal dumping, please call METROCALL at 311. Remember these regulations are for our health and safety.
STRANGE THOUGHTS FOR TODAY:
- A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song.
- A committee is a group that succeeds in getting something done only when it consists of three members, one who is sick, and the other absent.
- A bachelor is someone who doesn’t have to leave a party when he starts having a good time.
ATTEND & WIN CONTINUES FOR 2009!
You can win your choice of one of these three fabulous door prizes shown above simply by attending the February 22nd meeting! If snow and ice hit again, be prepared with the ultimate snowbroom and scraper. This scraper can reach over 4 ft so no more leaning over the fender trying to reach the middle of the windshield. For ice on side windows, use the tough shockabsorbing hand scraper. For those who are still cleaning up limbs and debris, the telescoping bypass loppers will make quick work of limbs up to 1¼” in diameter. Use the 37” built-in telescoping extension arms to reach high up limbs that can’t be reached using regular loppers. For the computer savvy, you can never have enough flash drives. This 4 GB is a high capacity drive that will hold thousands of photographs or files. Congratulations to Jimmy Dillon of Second Street who took home a 14” Oval Platter at our last meeting! All attendees over 17 years of age are eligible to win. The drawing will be held at the end of Sunday’s meeting. Must be present to win! Membership not required!SPECIAL $195 DRAWING FOR SSNA MEMBERS:
In addition to the attendee drawing, SSNA members are eligible for a special cash drawing. Marshall Moore of Venetian Way was the winner of the January $185 drawing. Unfortunately, Marshall could not make the meeting so $10 will be added to the February drawing. A name will be drawn from all paid-up SSNA members and if that member is present at the end of the meeting, he/she will win a $195 cash prize. If the member is not present, $10 will be added to the pot each meeting until someone wins. Must be present to win! Current SSNA membership required!(Potluck hosts will be counted as present. New memberships accepted at the meeting upon completion of Membership Application and payment of $6.00 dues. Applications may also be obtained by contacting Zane at 636-1751 or zanelockhartjr@insightbb.com.)

NEW CHAIR FOR MEMBERSHIP & WELCOMING COMMITTEE
The Second Street Neighborhood Association has sought for several years to find a member to chair the Membership & Welcoming Committee. So, it is with great gratitude and expectation that SSNA President, Jan Cieremans, has appointed Jeff Call as the new chair for Membership & Welcoming Committee. Of course Jeff cannot do all the work himself and is looking for two or more members in each block to work with him on the committee. Committee members will identify new residents moving into the neighborhood and arrange to welcome them to Old Louisville and the Second Street neighborhood. The committee will also decide what type of welcoming packet and gifts might be appropriate. We have had many members in the past who were agreeable to serving on such a committee if only we had a chairperson. Now is your chance! Please contact Jeff at 635-7449 if you can assist with this important committee. The Association recognizes that new members are the lifeblood that sustains an organization. New members bring fresh ideas, new approaches, and new energy. Membership in the SSNA shows commitment to improving the quality of life throughout historic Old Louisville. The SSNA proudly recognizes and welcomes our newest members:- Bernie Miles, Elizabeth, IN
