Volunteers needed for St. James Art Show Clean-Up

The 53rd Annual Saint James Court Art Show is almost here! Starting Friday, October 2, over a quarter-million visitors and artists from around the country will descend on the Old Louisville neighborhood for the Annual Saint James Court Art Show. This event is a real showcase for Old Louisville because it provides many people with their first look at our historic neighborhood.

In preparation for our visitors, the SSNA encourages members and neighbors to come out this Sunday, September 27, from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm, for our Annual Fall Blitz. As we do every year, volunteers should meet at Magnolia Park on Second St., just south of Magnolia Avenue. From there, we will organize cleanup crews for the sidewalks, park, alleys, and tree trimming. Neighbors should bring rakes, shovels, brooms, bow saws, pruners, work gloves, etc., if you have them. If you don’t have clean-up tools, we always have extra!

If you cannot work full time or have to come late or leave early, every minute you give is appreciated and leaves the neighborhood looking a little better! If you have other commitments for Sunday and cannot participate, please do the neighborly thing and do a cleanup before Sunday around your residence. And, if you have some elderly neighbors, give them a little help too! Also, be sure to give a big Second Street “thank you” to our Dismas House volunteers who will be helping Sunday!

Free Papa John's Pizza Sunday for volunteers

When the cleanup is finished around 4:30 pm, everyone should regroup in Magnolia Park. By this time, everyone should have worked up a good appetite because we will have plenty of delicious Papa John’s hot pizza for our volunteers. After pizza, the Association will hold a short business meeting in the Magnolia Park Gazebo around 5 pm.

St. James Art Show funds neighborhood projects

Although people in Old Louisville often take the Art Show for granted, it is nationally recognized and ranked as one of the top art shows in the country. The Saint James Court Art Show (http://www.stjamescourtartshow.com) attracts artists and visitors not only from the US, but from other countries as well. We hope they will all leave with a favorable impression of Old Louisville!

The Art Show, which runs Friday, Oct. 2nd through Sunday, Oct. 4th, provides the primary fundraiser for most neighborhood associations as well as the Old Louisville Neighborhood Council. The monies raised during this event fund neighborhood activities and large-scale improvement projects such as our Victorian street lights, benches, urns, plantings etc. that we all enjoy. None of this would be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers. That is why we need you!

As we have done for several years, the Second Street Neighborhood Association will provide parking for Art Show patrons at the Jefferson Community & Technical College at Second and Broadway and provide a shuttle service to and from the Art Show. Caroline and Jo Ann have already begun calling SSNA folks to help operate the JCTC parking lot. We need volunteers for parking attendants, van drivers, and miscellaneous jobs. We hope everyone can work at least one volunteer shift - or more! If you have not received a call, or if you are not an SSNA member but would like to help out your neighborhood, please call: Jo Ann: (H) 636-1751 (C) 548-3823 or (Email) jo-ann-lockhart@insightbb.com . Shifts are 8:15 am to 1:45 pm and 1:45 pm to 7 pm. Meeting people attending the Art Show and being part of this great event is more fun than work and everyone has a good time. Hope you can be there!

Police to start ticketing parking violators

The 4th Division Police Commander announced that immediately following the Saint James Court Art Show additional officers will be assigned to ticket speeders and illegal parking in the neighborhood. There have been two serious accidents at 2nd & Ormsby in the last few months and speeding may have been a factor. In addition, the SSNA has requested that Metro Traffic Engineers adjust the time delay on the traffic light at this intersection and also requested trimming of the lower tree canopy on 2nd Street that partially blocks the view of the traffic signal until vehicles are within a few hundred feet of the intersection. The police have also set up a radar speed-reader on 2nd St. to remind drivers to check their speed and to slow down. In a couple weeks, officers will be assigned to hand out tickets to speeders. This is your warning!

Police have noted that more and more people are violating parking rules. Police are cracking down on people that violate “No Parking” areas or ignore “No Parking” signs for street cleaning. This week, the police ticketed several cars that were parked on the street during Wednesday’s street cleaning. Please remember that street cleaning is essential to keep debris and dirt out of the storm drains. When storm drains are clogged with debris, water backs up and floods homes and basements. Please cooperate with the city and move your vehicle to an off-street parking area or on to another street so the street sweepers can do their job. Next time police say you may find your car in the city tow-in lot, which is a lot further to walk then it is to park in the next block. This is your warning!

Another area that police will be watching is for vehicles parked too close to corners, too far from the curb, or with wheels up on the easement. Police officers will begin ticketing any vehicle that is closer than 20 feet from a corner per city ordinances. Police say it is very dangerous when people pull out from an alley and cannot see oncoming traffic because cars are parked too close to the corner. Likewise, cars parked further then 6 inches from the curb or parked with wheels up on the easement will be ticketed. This also applies to vehicles that pull in, rather than back in, to a small parking place and leave their tail ends sticking out. This is your warning!

The police crack down is to improve safety for neighbor residents and not to cause an inconvenience. The police just ask that everyone obey the rules when driving and parking.

South of Hill Street? Check your parking permit

This message is for neighbors south of Hill Street who participate in the Residential Parking Permit Program. Due to an apparent computer programming error, letters reminding residents to re-apply for their parking permits were sent out late or not at all. If your parking permit expired in September and you received a ticket, it will be dismissed, however, you need to renew your permit as soon as possible. For more information call: 569-6222.

Do you qualify for energy tax credits?

Homeowners can qualify for 30% tax credit (up to $1500) for energy saving home improvements such as: energy efficient windows, doors, skylights, roofing, insulation, heating and cooling systems, water heaters, etc. For specifics go to: www.energystar.gov/taxcredits. Also, remember that just because a product has an energy seal, does not mean it qualifies for the tax credit.

Joan Stewart, Chair of the Old Louisville Neighborhood Council, needs a volunteer for a special assignment during the Art Show on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Call 593-1242 if you can help!
