OldLouisville Forum

We're Brick House neighbors and we take pride in looking after the neighborhood. We participate in neighborhood clean-ups and do neighborhood outreach to see what the needs and resources of the Old Louisville neighborhood are.

(Actually, this is just wishful thinking so far. We need to get the Old Louisvillers amongst us working together on this. Does this mean you?)

If you live in or near Old Louisville and want to become part of the Old Louisville community, please join this group.

Second Street Neighborhood Association

Being an active and supportive member of the Second Street Neighborhood Association is a great way to support our local neighborhood.

The SSNA meets on the 4th Sunday (most months), usually at the Kling Senior Center, 219 W. Ormsby Avenue (between 2nd and 3rd Sts.).

Requiem for Engine Company 7!

Mayor Abramson closed our historic local firehouse today (Sunday Jan. 11)

The Mayor has permanently closed our local firehouse this Saturday!

  • This was the oldest continuously operated firehouse in the U.S.!!
  • It was our closest firehouse. Closing it will increase fire response time for the Brick House and all our neighbors.
  • It served Old Louisville, which has the largest collection of Victorian homes in the U.S.
  • It served the more densely populated (but less affluent) northern end of Old Louisville, with many seniors and many high rise buildings.
  • Doing this makes our neighborhood less sustainable and self-sufficient. We need more neighborhood institutions, not fewer!

(An injunction has been filed but won't be heard until Monday morning. Our firefighters volunteered to maintain service until then without compensation but that offer was refused.)

Volunteers needed for St. James Art Show Clean-Up

The 53rd Annual Saint James Court Art Show is almost here! Starting Friday, October 2, over a quarter-million visitors and artists from around the country will descend on the Old Louisville neighborhood for the Annual Saint James Court Art Show. This event is a real showcase for Old Louisville because it provides many people with their first look at our historic neighborhood.

In preparation for our visitors, the SSNA encourages members and neighbors to come out this Sunday, September 27, from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm, for our Annual Fall Blitz. As we do every year, volunteers should meet at Magnolia Park on Second St., just south of Magnolia Avenue. From there, we will organize cleanup crews for the sidewalks, park, alleys, and tree trimming. Neighbors should bring rakes, shovels, brooms, bow saws, pruners, work gloves, etc., if you have them. If you don’t have clean-up tools, we always have extra!

If you cannot work full time... (read and comment)

LAST... Louisvillians Advancing Sustainable Transport...

How do we get our voices heard???

Our community is actively pursuing a biking lifestyle on many accounts and with folks of all ages participating as members of a movement for social change...

So whats next... Mayor's Hike and Bike?? Ride to Work with City Support... Park and Tarc?? Sure why not... but there has got to be more and there has to be a safer way of doing all this together.

We are proposing a community-based survey be run this summer to understand and gather facts about the alternatives to combustion-based transport as well as alternatives to further roadway development. Anyone interested in these ideas is welcome to gather and present or propose your city wide solutions, neighborhood applications or personal resolutions on the issue.

We welcome your input and your ideas and would love to spend some time documenting these expressions as a part of organizing a film on the subject to be used in outreach around the city. West and and East end alike do not seem to be benefitting from the grand scale of corporate progress a... (read and comment)

OLNC Appeal for Support to Save Engine Company 7

Mayor Jerry Abramson is closing our Engine 7 downtown firehouse at 821 S. 6th Street near York this Saturday, January 10 without public discussion or input from Metro Council

  • TO: All Who Expect Quick Emergency Response When You Dial 911
  • DATE: January 6, 2009
  • SUBJECT: 911-URGENT: ACTION NEEDED TO STOP LOSS OF YOUR FIRE PROTECTION!

Without public discussion or input from Metro Council, Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson is closing our Engine 7 downtown firehouse at 821 S. 6th Street near York this Saturday, January 10.

He is moving our twelve EMT firefighters to others of the 22 firehouses scattered throughout the Urban Services District (USD), thus rationalizing the claim that he is not cutting our fire service – a promise made repeatedly during 2000-2003 when promoting City/County merger…despite the fact that Engine 7 made 2,085 emergency response runs in 2008 and has always been one of the busiest in the Department.

The Metro Mayor announced this unilaterally in mid-December, telling the press he was closing the firehouse to help balance an anticipated Metro Government budget shortfall of $20 million this fiscal year due to lagging occupational and business profit... (read and comment)

Hurriedly closing Engine Company 7 raises issues of social justice, neighborhood sustainability, and good government

Please attend the meeting tonight on closing our historic local firehouse (the oldest continuously operated firehouse in the U.S!!)

Dear Brick Housers,

In a sly move during the chaos of the times, the City is rushing to permanently close our historic local firehouse (the oldest continuously operating firehouse in the U.S.) just three days from now. This raises vital issues of social justice since the firehouse serves the northern, less affluent end of Old Louisville. And it flies in the face of our core Brick House principles of localism and neighborhood sustainability. If we truly want to walk the walk, we as an organization and as individuals need to mobilize and speak up now.

On December 10, Mayor Abramson gave just three weeks' notice that Old Louisville's Fire Engine Company No. 7, at 821 S. 6th St., would be closed and permanently disbanded. Unless we act during the next day or two, this living local institution will be forever lost on January 1 (this Thursday).

Those of us who question this action invite you to attend a meeting:

  • Public Meeting
  • Monday night (tonight) at 7 p.m.
  • at the offices of the Council on Mental R
